Something Beautiful For God

Matthew 25:40 – Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me. (NRSV)

What a mess of mismatched morsels! In front of her was food of every description brought to Evangel Hall (an inner city mission in Toronto, Ontario, Canada) all to provide a little something to satisfy the hunger of those who stop each day at the drop-in centre.

She faces the dilemma daily — how to make something beautiful, tasteful, and nutritious out of the odds and ends that arrive. Every day, she dons her cook's hat, and whips up something beautiful for God. Yes, that's what she's doing. As she blends and seasons and… she talks to me of her love for God, and why she does what she does for so little reward. As the next tray is held high on its journey downstairs, she smiles, and talks a bit about her own life's story, and how God brought her to this ministry. Yes, here she ministers to the physical needs of those who come to the drop-in centre day after day.

Prayer: Gracious God, we don't live our lives by bread alone, but we hunger nonetheless. Make us hungry today for the things that truly satisfy, and so feed us till we want no more. We pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.
