Isaiah 40:8 – The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever. (KJV)
My nephew has a green thumb. Flowers and plants just seem to bloom and flourish under his skillful care. His home is adorned with healthy, luscious leaves and different shapes, varieties, and colours of beautiful flowers.
However, I do not have great success growing live plants or flowers. Plus, I have a couple of issues with real plants. I don't like the gnats that they tend to attract, and the life span of live flowers is too short for me.
But, since I do appreciate the beauty of flowers and leaves, I took a silk floral design class. My home, too, has beautiful plants and flowers, but instead of pesky gnats, I just have to keep up with the dust issue.
I thought about the brief lifespan of a flower, and took that concern before God. I like to think that the following poem contains what He might say about it.
- The Flower's Beauty
Flowers have a beauty
This I don't deny
But they only live a short while
Then they fade and quickly die
God helped me see the flower
In a new and different way
The message in their colour
I pass on to you today
The blue ones are the angels
As they watched from heaven on high
As I left my throne in glory
To go to planet earth to die
The red ones say I love you
I shed my blood at Calvary
The green ones simply mean
You'll spend eternity with me
The yellow says I've risen
I Am the Morning Son
I lie no longer in the tomb
My work on earth is done
The white is for deliverance
I have set the captives free
I've released you from the enemy
You now belong to Me
And all the colours in between
The purple, orange, pink
Mean I can do away above
All you'll ask or think
So remember my beloved
When you see a grand bouquet
There is beauty in the flower
And what the flower has to say
The lifespan of a flower, indeed, is brief, as is our lifespan.
James 4:14b – For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away. (KJV)
But flowers have a special way of bringing love, joy, comfort, and beauty into the lives that they touch. May that also be said of us, as we live out the time that God has given us here on earth. May we show forth the love, joy, comfort, and beauty of Jesus to any and all with whom we come in contact.
Prayer: Lord, thank You for sharing with us the beauty of Your flowers. Thank You also for allowing us the privilege of showing forth the beauty of Jesus Christ. Amen.

Thank you, Cheryl, for a wonderful poem. I, too, am a gardener, and look after our church’s gardens, and sadden at the shortness of their life. But what are we to God? A mere speck in time for our God, yet all are beautiful in his eyes; and because he created us, we should not disappoint him as failing to yield our brilliance as he planned for us. God bless.

I am a gardener and love flowers and plants. If a pretty weed strays into one of my flower beds, I allow it to stay. The actual blossom may not live long, but the plant remains to remind us of its beauty. I loved the poem! I especially loved the part that reminded us of God’s ability to do more than we can think or ask. I have a problem remembering that; and as I am going through a difficult time, I thank you for your devotional.
