A Personal Touch

Matthew 25:40 – And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me. (KJV)

Yesterday was a fun day. I visited a number of people who needed a friendly smile and a kind word.

My first visit was an hour spent with my ninety-six-year-old mama in a nursing home, where she is totally alert, but not able to get about without aid of a walker or wheelchair. Because she is so alert, and because her memory is so good, the days get very long. Daddy is gone, and my sister and brother live out of town. My visits therefore mean much to her.

A few blocks away, I visited a man who carried the mail on foot on a city route for years. He recently had serious surgery, but is doing very well at home now.

I find that it is not always easy to visit the nursing home and the homebound folks. Some of them have had strokes and can't talk. Some of them have a sour attitude on life. Some of them think that I ought to stay much longer than I can.

Let's respond willingly when God calls us to visit shut-ins. It's an opportunity to bless others, and to fill our souls with joy and peace.

Prayer: O God, keep us aware of what a privilege it is that You give us to be able to bring a smile to shut-ins. We hear You, Lord, when You say, "Inasmuch as you have done it to the least of these, you have done it to Me." Help us never to forget. Amen.
