Isaiah 1:18 – "Come now, let us reason together," says the Lord. "Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool." (NIV)
My Dad never got to open his new pressure washer last Christmas. He had a heart attack on Christmas Day, and died of a stroke after open-heart surgery a month afterwards. Much later, my Mom decided to trade in the pressure washer for a better one for my birthday.
After about eight hours of use, I tackled the big project: the long, steep driveway at our summer cabin. Every year, it gets covered with moss, lichen, pine needles, and leaves, and becomes so slippery that we can't go up it with a car. Pressure washing it is a very satisfying job, because I can really tell where I've done. The black lichen is removed, and the original white surface of the concrete is restored. Sometimes, a minister's job satisfaction is very long-term, so seeing such quick results can not only provide short-term satisfaction, but also provide spiritual parallels.
How much Jesus is like that pressure washer! When we receive His living Spirit, He washes away our black sin, and restores us to the way He originally intended us to be, so that we can do what He intended us to do. What a relief it is to know that the guilt that has plagued us is forgiven, and we are restored to a right relationship with God.
Prayer: Thank You for the cleanness that comes through Your forgiveness. Enable us to recognize our sins quickly, and confess them to You, because You are "faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:9 NIV). Amen.
