The New Barn

Saturday, September 17, 2005

Luke 17:21 – Nor will people say, "Here it is," or "There it is," because the kingdom of God is within you. (NIV)

After some years, "The Farm", as we call it, stood vacant. The old barn was long gone, and only a silo marked where it had been.

One day, it was contemplated that a new barn be erected, and over the past few years, it has now become a reality. The silo, no longer needed, was demolished. The new barn has taken shape, constructed to accommodate horses. The stalls were built, the tack room finished, bales of hay delivered, and the water supply dug in, all in preparation for the arrival of the horses.

Though the new barn stood tall and grand in readiness, something was missing, for it seemed like a silent sentinel. Then they came: the horses, frisky and in need of the security of their new home. The silent sentinel came alive.

Any who stand as silent sentinels will find they have a need to come alive. It's not the things of life that make us alive; rather it is the life from within. In the kingdom of God, Christ is that life Who comes to dwell among us, to give us life anew.

The barn — filled with horses — was given new life. So it is for us: when we are filled with the Holy Spirit, we come alive. Christ the King is among us. We need only to invite Him in.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, we invite You to come to live within us and to dwell among us. Let us not stand as silent sentinels, but be filled with Your life, so that we may live a new life in You. We pray in Your holy name. Amen.
