Doing Good

Psalm 1:2 – But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. (NIV)

Once after a busy day at work, I hurriedly drove to the gym for my daily exercise. I noticed there weren't many cars around and thought it must be due to the time of day. As I climbed out of the car, the manager came to meet me saying that the gym was closed because they had had a break-in during the night. There were pieces of shattered glass in the carpet so it wasn't safe for anyone to exercise that day.

I jumped back in my car and went home. There were several things awaiting my attention. The thing I chose to do was read my Bible and do some journalling. I needed that time alone with God. It always amazes me what comes out of the end of my pen when I journal. I could see that God had allowed that break-in at the gym. Going to exercise had been a good thing to do, but God had something better in mind. He wanted me to spend time with Him alone.

So many times in our lives, we have plans to do so many good things. They really are good things. They have eternal value. But sometimes God has a better plan for us — and that could be just to spend time with Him. He wants us to be like Him rather than just doing good works. We are to serve God, but there are times when the most important thing to do is spend time with Him.

Psalm 84:10 – Better is one day in your courts than a thousand elsewhere. (NIV)

Prayer: Lord, Jesus, so many times we have such good plans. But You want us to spend time with You. Help us to remember that daily. Amen.
