The Children's Friend

Sunday, October 12, 2003

Luke 18:16 – But Jesus called the children to him and said, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these." (NIV)

When my children were small, there was one lady at our church who always had a group of children by her side. Not only was she active as a Sunday School teacher and Junior Church co-ordinator, but she also greeted each child warmly and welcomed them. Observing her, it was clear that she was the children's friend.

Why did the children follow this lady like she was the Pied Piper? Why did they go to her more frequently than to the other adults in that congregation? I believe they went to her because they knew the difference between an adult who tolerated kids and the one who loved them. They had discovered the one adult who took time to play their games and listen to their corny jokes, the one who always told them the truth.

Jesus demonstrated these same qualities when He invited the children to come to Him. Through His actions He showed how much He cared for these young lives, how much He loved them.

Prayer: Dear God, thank You for showing us how much You love even the smallest child. Help us to follow Your example and love the children in our families, in our neighbourhoods, and in our churches. Amen.
