Opening The Gate

Matthew 11:28-30 – Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light. (NIV)

At my place of employment, we must have a fence around our site for security reasons. There is a gate that is about ten feet wide, where a person can enter in their vehicle. The motor that was opening this gate has developed a problem and is not working, so I must manually open this gate to drive through. The gate weighs about 250 pounds and it is no easy task to push it open. I have also noticed that, as the weeks have gone by, it seems to be getting harder to push this gate open. I cannot wait until this motor is fixed so it can take the load off me.

Just as I need the motor to take the burden of opening the gate off me, I need Jesus to help me with the burdens I carry through life. One of these burdens could be sin, which is definitely a part of my life I need help with. Another burden could be worrying. There are other areas that may weigh us down in life. Jesus told us that his yoke is easy and his burden is light. The rest that we receive from Jesus is love, healing and peace with God. While I may still have to labour to open my gate at work, with Jesus' help, my relationship with God takes worry and stress and changes it into spiritual productivity.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, there have been times that we have let our burdens weigh us down. Your burden is light and your yoke is easy. We pray that we may find the rest we need in you. In Jesus' name. Amen.
