Bus Ministry (3)

Philippians 2:1-2 – If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose. (NIV)

When I began driving the school bus, I did not realize the support that I would receive from the other bus drivers. The two-way radio gives the bus drivers a tool for instant communication with each other. Not only are they willing to get on the radio to share information on the best way to get to a particular place, or to report a road closure, but they are also willing to share their own difficult experiences. If I've had a particularly bad time that day and everyone knows about it, because I had to speak with the dispatcher on the radio to report the incident on the bus, I know that, when I get back to the yard, there will be someone there to tell me about an equally difficult run that happened to them. I have been very thankful for this group of bus drivers. It's no ordinary group of people; it's a community — a community that is one in spirit and purpose.

When I think of our community of bus drivers, it makes me think of who we are as the church, and the need we have to encourage each other every day along the road of life. We don't have two-way radios, which connect us into each other's lives, like I do at work. We have to find other means of connecting with each other, so that we can encourage and give hope to each other.

Prayer: Thank You, loving God, for the gift of being able to communicate with others. Thank You for those people in our lives who continue to encourage us and give us hope. Help us, today, to reach out to someone, to encourage them, and give them hope in You. Thank You for Your encouragement and Your hope in our lives. Help us to be like-minded, one in spirit and purpose, in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
