One Sunday morning last summer, I arrived at church before anyone else. As I took my seat, I thought, "How wonderful… a few minutes of quiet." However my own thoughts don't endure quietness for very long at a time, so I was very soon looking around for something to read to pass the time. Within reach there was the hymn book and a Bible. I picked up the Bible and opened it to the introductory pages. There I found a brief history of all the English translations of the Bible from the very first. I read about William Tyndale, and others who were so determined to put the scriptures into the language of ordinary people that they gave up homes, families, country and freedom in order to accomplish their aims. Tyndale lived in exile, moving from Germany, to Holland, to Belgium, working in secret at his translation. In the end, he was betrayed by one who pretended to be a friend and supporter. He was strangled and burned at the stake at the age of forty. "His Biblical translations made directly from the Greek and Hebrew into straightforward, vigorous English, remain the basis of both the Authorized Version and the Revised Version." [Oxford Dictionary of the Christian Church] Because of men like these, we can now sit and read God's word in our comfortable pews, or at home in a favourite chair. Only most of us don't bother. Shouldn't it ever make us curious what it was that these men found in the Bible that made them willing to suffer all kinds of ignominy in order to make it available to everyone "down to the lowest plough-boy"? How can we dare neglect to investigate?
Prayer: Almighty God, thank you for all the faithful witnesses who have gone before us. Make us hungry and thirsty for the knowledge of your word, that we may turn from worthless things and that our lives may be grounded in your truth. Amen.

Saturday, May 18, 2024 – In North Africa — Living in North Africa we get so used to hearing the call to prayer it becomes like background noise and sometimes I don't hear it anymore. I am challenged by the fact that some Muslims are so committed to pray that they go to the mosque 5 times a day. Would you consider, with me, setting your alarm to go off at 3:00 every day and pray for these three things: 5 families to come to know Christ, 3 people for us to read scripture with,1 new church plant.
