Action Is Needed

Listen to this devotional:

Psalm 46:10 – Be still and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth. (NIV)

I have been thinking on today's Scripture verse for some time. I read, searched the Scriptures, and thought long and hard about how faith can sustain us at every stage of life. I drew closer to God, learned more of His truths, and documented them from Scripture. But there came a day in my quiet meditative state when I received another understanding. "Time for action! You've been out of the stream of life long enough. You need to start moving with its flow again." Meditation, study, and contemplation are good and necessary, but in them, we do not find the complete answer. Action is needed.

There is no stopping place for a Christian. To be a member of the body of Christ means to be moving on toward the goal of the high calling of Christ, to be sharing the message with others, and to be inspiring them in the same way that the message of Jesus inspired us.

Philippians 3:13-14 – Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining towards what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenwards in Christ Jesus. (NIV)

Jesus withdrew from the crowds and went away into the wilderness to pray and rest many times, but He did not stay there beyond the time necessary for His rest and fulfilling. He went out into the world again to teach and heal others. Even when He did His most intense praying in the Garden of Gethsemane, He got up, left the silence, faced the mob, and headed toward Jerusalem and the cross. He knew what the Father had sent Him to do.

It is necessary for us to enter into the silence of our "closets" to pray, think, and examine, but when we have finished, we need to enter the world once more to carry out our mission and to seek for further truths that will lead us and those around us onward toward Christ Jesus.

Prayer: Lord, balance out our lives with quiet times of prayer and worship, and help us to put our thoughts into action. In Christ's name, we pray. Amen.
