John 14:1 – Do not let your heart be troubled. Believe in God, believe also in me.
Death is coming soon, for our Lord, for ourselves. That's the context of the words we share today from John. This death is not welcome, but it also cannot be avoided. Life is so short, and there is never enough time, and always time runs out. Jesus had only a very short time, 33 years, and only three of them in fulfilling this ministry of God, a ministry whose effects must last for eternity and then … beyond.
My friend came and broke the news that she had terminal cancer. We had been through a lot together but this was so unexpected and so very unfair for someone so young and so full of life. Her response? "I'm O.K., Ken. God has got his arms around me. God is with me in the cancer and God will give me the strength to face whatever comes."
That was a year ago and she is still radiating the love and peace of God in the midst of the storm that cancer has caused. "Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid."
Prayer: In the storms of life, O Christ, give me your peace and I shall be content. Nothing matters as much as your presence. Teach me to be still and know you, that I may no longer fear the storms of life, for you are the Lord of all. Amen.
