Ordering From The Pictures

Listen to this devotional:

Matthew 6:19 – Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. (NIV)

Have you ever gone to a restaurant which features a menu with pictures of some of the food offered? Pictures of food seem to draw our eyes to them, and in some cases, they influence our decisions about what we order. Recently, a friend of ours was out with his wife for breakfast. The menu was covered with pictures of many of the items they could order, and our friend made his choice. When we met a day later, I asked him how they had enjoyed their breakfast out. He replied that the pictures on the menu looked better than the items did on the plate.

This is so much like the things in life that look great, but once we purchase or pursue them, we sadly find that they are not as good as we had anticipated. All too often, we focus our thoughts and desires on this world, forgetting what the Scriptures teach.

Matthew 6:20 – But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. (NIV)

We live in a fallen world that needs to know the truth of the Word of God. People need their eyes opened. We are called to go out into the world, living with our eyes fixed on the One Who is unchanging and eternal.

2 Corinthians 4:18 – So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal. (NIV)

Prayer: Dear Lord, how we want our eyes to be focused on You and only You. Please help us in our journey to keep them fixed on Your face and glory. We want to take only from the plate on which You offer us the bread of life. Help us to show others in the world how to come into a relationship with You, so that they to can know the glory of Your love. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
