The Real Magic Eraser

Listen to this devotional:

John 4:10 – [Jesus] replied, "If you only knew what a wonderful gift God has for you, and who I am, you would ask me for some living water!" (TLB)

Have you tried using one of those new sponges to erase difficult stains and marks from walls, floors, and other surfaces? These sponges easily remove stains that previously could not be removed. It is so simple and easy to do that the cleaning process seems to take place like magic. However, recently, I saw pictures of severe burns that were caused when a child thoughtlessly rubbed one of those sponges on his face and arms. It was interesting to read that the only thing that made the burning stop was clean, clear water.

Seeing the pictures and reading the antidote for those burns made me think of how often those of us who call ourselves children of God thoughtlessly make messes in our lives. Then we wish that they could be erased like magic, but those marks and stains remain. Is there a magic eraser for us? How can we become clean again? We can start by asking the person we've wronged to forgive us, and we can try to make amends for what we have done. Still, we feel that burning pain until we seek and receive forgiveness from our Lord.

How wonderful it is to know that when we repent of our sins and seek Christ's forgiveness, He cleanses us with living water and soothes our pain. Thanks be to God that, like the clean, clear water that washed away the little child's burning pain, the love of Jesus Christ washes away our sin and erases our pain. It is then that we know what a blessing it is to be a child of God.

Prayer: Thank You, Lord Jesus, for being the living water that washes away our sin and soothes our souls. Help us, by the power of Your Holy Spirit, to clean up all those messes we thoughtlessly make in our lives, and teach us to be more loving and forgiving. In Your holy name, we pray. Amen.
