My Reassurance

Listen to this devotional:

Matthew 10:30 – But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. (RSV)

One wintery day, I drove to a nearby shopping mall and was dismayed that sand had not been spread in the parking lot. I gingerly attempted to pull into a vacant space but my car was doing what it wanted on the ice. I was headed for a parked truck and the world seemed suddenly very quiet. In the silence, I thought I heard the words, "Turn the wheel." I continued to struggle with the steering wheel. Again, the same words. I obeyed and easily drove my car into the space on the other side of the truck. I realized that had I hit that truck, the flatbed would have gone through the doorpost and windshield on the driver's side.

Shaken, I realized all my efforts had been upon guiding the car away from the truck and not toward and around it. I had not thought to turn the steering wheel in the other direction by myself. I am confident that God spoke to me that snowy afternoon. Even today, some twenty years later, no other explanation makes sense. God was watching out for me, and by accepting His guidance, I was saved from an accident. Similarly, it is true that God watches out for each of us.

Exodus 23:20 – See, I am sending an angel ahead of you to guard you along the way and to bring you to the place I have prepared. (NIV)

Prayer: Heavenly Father, we know that we will always be safe in Your hands. You show us Your immeasurable love in so many ways. Help us to open our hearts and minds to the reality of Your existence. Amen.
