Romans 1:1-2 – I appeal to you, therefore, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you may discern what is the will of God – what is good and acceptable and perfect.

Journal entry: I'm at it again. This time it's VLT's. Last time it was casinos. I wonder what it will be next time?

      MEMO

To: the Churches of Nova Scotia:
From: Kenneth Stright, President, Atlantic Ecumenical Council
Subject: Video Lottery Terminals in our communities

The Premier of Nova Scotia has recently declared that he will abide by the decision of municipal plebiscites regarding the banning or otherwise of VTL's.

This letter is to ask you to act quickly in encouraging people in you community to approach your municipal council with the request that the people be asked to express their will regarding VLT's.

Some information to note: VLT's brought in $69 million in 1996 (Nova Scotia). The 80/20 principle operates – 80{8395b6ce96fcf25a14d80edc3b65c36a8995b6c1ba5f8c16ac11d8adaa79f35b} ($55 million) of the amount comes from 20{8395b6ce96fcf25a14d80edc3b65c36a8995b6c1ba5f8c16ac11d8adaa79f35b} of the users of VLT's; 20{8395b6ce96fcf25a14d80edc3b65c36a8995b6c1ba5f8c16ac11d8adaa79f35b} comes from 80{8395b6ce96fcf25a14d80edc3b65c36a8995b6c1ba5f8c16ac11d8adaa79f35b} of the users. One gambling addict affects the lives of at least 17 people.

The Atlantic Ecumenical Council Executive has sent this to you with the prayer that you can and will act now.

Prayer: Gracious God, why must your church speak out on every issue of concern? Why must we confront the powers and principalities with the stands of the church and the message of the gospel against various forms of social evil in our communities? Forget it, God, I think I've answered my own question. Lead us through to the way, the truth, and the life you call us to cherish. Amen.
