Listen while you read: "Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise"1 (Lyrics) |
I remember how, on more than one occasion, my junior high home economics teacher told our class, "A woman spends half her life wondering who she will marry, and the other half wondering what to feed him for dinner."
Whether or not the quotation was hers or where she got it from, I do not know, but it has stuck with me for over six decades. I also remember a little poem about this:
- Thank God for dirty dishes;
They have a tale to tell.
While others may go hungry,
We're eating very well.
With home, health, and happiness,
I shouldn't want to fuss;
By the stack of evidence,
God's been very good to us.
– Mary Arlis Stuber
Although some people may regard cooking and washing dishes as drudgery, the fact that Jesus did cooking just thrills my heart so much!
John 21:9,12-13 – Then, as soon as [the disciples] had come to land, they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid on it, and bread. Jesus said to them, "Come and eat breakfast." Yet none of the disciples dared ask Him, "Who are You?" — knowing that it was the Lord. Jesus then came and took the bread and gave it to them, and likewise the fish. (NKJV)
Jesus, the King of kings, the Lord of lords, the Great I AM, the Alpha and the Omega, Jesus, the Lamb of God that takes away the sins of the world — Jesus was cooking! God Almighty cooking!
It is almost unheard of for an earthly king to cook for himself, let alone to serve others, but Jesus, the King of kings, not only cooked for the disciples, but also personally served them!
Cooking has taken on a whole new meaning and delight for me! Sure, I've read and even memorized "Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God." (1 Corinthians 10:31 NKJV) But now, it has taken root and helped me — and hopefully, you — to see daily meal preparation in a whole new way! Thank You, Jesus!
Perhaps, this will also make meal consumers more appreciative!
Prayer: Lord Jesus, may we, Your children, take joy in Your Word and in Your example, for You said of Yourself that "the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many." (Matthew 20:28 NKJV) "Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, to God who alone is wise, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen." (1 Timothy 1:17 NKJV)

You certainly spoke to me this morning with your devotional, Cheremiah. Thank you for your thoughtful and clever writing.

Good one. Thanks for writing.
Hope your autumn colours are as vibrant as mine in Manitoba.
Keep writing.
Cheryl, not only was Jesus cooking, He was grilling fish at a barbecue.
And it was like a guys’ camp-out at the lake. Most men can identify with and appreciate that!
Thank you, Cheryl, for sharing. I love the thought of fish for breakfast since my dad, a great fisherman, ate fish for any meal. Praise God, Jesus was teaching us all how to serve others.
I never thought about this before. Thank you for making meal prep easier. I haven’t seen your name on posts in quite awhile and have missed your thought-provoking ideas. Blessings from Canada.
Your reflection, Cheryl, speaks to the proper focus of life. The message is simple and yet profound. I am reminded of Bro Lawrence and his prospective of living life of what seems monotonous! Blessings.
What an excellent Daily Devotional! You show a completely new light on Jesus preparing breakfast for His followers.
Bless you, Cheryl, for your inspired writing!

Cheryl, thank you for pointing my attention to this beautiful record of Jesus cooking and serving breakfast. It truly warmed my heart to realize His clear example of caring out love.
Enjoy a blessed day!
When I read the scripture you quoted, I thought surely it can’t be right. I have read this story many times and yet when I read the same scripture in my NIV Bible, it said the same thing. Jesus cooked! And served! Thank you for this devotional. It was an eye-opener for me.
Thank you, Cheremiah, for your very informative and mindful devotional today. Truly our Lord was a great server in those days and so very faithfully serves each and everyone of us these days. It is important that we follow His ways and be ever ready to reach out and serve others. Blessings for your special writing today.
Dear Cheryl,
Thanks so very much for your devotional this morning. Although I’ve read the Scripture before of Jesus preparing a meal for His disciples, it has never hit home the way you wrote about it. Thanks again so very much.
May God bless you abundantly.
Good morning, Cheryl,
So good to read your devotional this morning, such wonderful words, thank you.
Also, it has been a while since I have seen your name, I wondered what had happened to you.
I hope and trust you are doing well. And may the Lord bless you and keep you and yours.
Hello Cheryl Mariano – Cheremiah!
It’s been quite a while since we heard from you. And wouldn’t you know? It took a godly woman to notice and point out a beautiful fact that Our dear Lord and King actually cooked breakfast for his friends!
Thanks for pointing out this amazing fact. And oh, wouldn’t those Apostles have enjoyed the very best tasting breakfast or meal that they ever ate in their lives!
It’s great to hear from you again Cheremiah, welcome back and may God bless you and your loved ones.

Good morning, Cheryl,
I was curious about Cheremiah so I looked it up on the internet. I enjoyed your song “You’re Still God”. You are an author, a poet, a songwriter, and probably many more that I didn’t come across.
I love your title “Jesus cooks” and enjoyed very much your devotional with your memories and verses from the Bible to remind us that God is good. I sometimes think that I never heard my mother complain about making meals and she lived in her own home until she was 92. I sometimes feel that I am tired of making meals at 75. Thanks for the encouragement and reframing the picture to inspire me also.
May you have a blessed day.
Thank you, Cheryl. This is something I hadn’t focused on before. It makes Jesus more personal, doesn’t it?
Hello Cheryl,
What an uplifting joyful morning devotional from you. I must have read that passage of our dear Lord ‘cooking’ breakfast for his friends at the Sea of Galilee. Wow, I can see with my mind’s eye Him having a small taste of the fish making sure it’s cooked through for their delight.
Thank you so much Cheryl, my grandchildren are in for a treat.
Thank you for sharing this encouraging devotional with us! Blessings.
