Worth More Than Many Sparrows

Listen while you read: "God Sees The Little Sparrow Fall"1 (Lyrics)

One of my favourite things about moving to Sauble Beach, Ontario, Canada, would have to be the birds. No matter what the season, we enjoy the various ducks on the river, as well as the many birds that come and go at the four feeders at the back of our house.

Over the past sixteen years, we have enjoyed red- and white-breasted nuthatches, chickadees, juncos, goldfinches, purple and house finches, woodpeckers, cardinals, blue jays, mourning doves, Baltimore orioles, rose-breasted grosbeaks, and hummingbirds. Many is the time when I have gone running for my camera to take pictures of them. What joy I feel when I get a good shot of one of them.

We keep a record of the many birds that we've seen here over the years. Whenever we see a new bird, we get out our bird book, try to identify it, and add it to the list.

I consider the birds to be a gift from God, and I thank Him for these beautiful creatures that He created and has allowed us to enjoy on a daily basis.

As I write this devotional and contemplate how each one of us, like the birds, is precious to God, our Creator, I am reminded of the children's song:

    God sees the little sparrow fall,
    It meets His tender view;
    If God so loves the little birds,
    I know He loves me too.

    He loves me too, He loves me too,
    I know He loves me too;
    Because He loves the little things,
    I know He loves me too.

           – Maria Straub

Matthew 10:29-31 – Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from the will of your Father. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So don't be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows. (NIV)

Matthew 6:26 – Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? (NIV)

God cares about the little birds, but He also cares about each one of us! His Word tells us that we are worth more than many sparrows. God loves every single person that He ever created. He loves you. He loves me. We are loved with an everlasting love. He knows all about our sins but He loves us so much that He sent His only Son Jesus to die for us, to pay the debt for our sins. Jesus died on the cross for us because He loves us so much. We can be forgiven. We can have eternal life if we believe in Him.

John 3:16 – For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. (KJV)

God cares about every detail of our lives. Even the hairs on our head are numbered. Don't be afraid because God knows about your sins — He still loves you. If you have never trusted Jesus as your Saviour, why not do it today?

Prayer: Dear heavenly Father, we are thankful that You are a God who knows everything about us but loves us so much that You sent Your only Son Jesus to die for us. You made us. You love us. You understand us. Thank You, Jesus, for giving Your life for each one of us who comes to You seeking forgiveness for our sins and trusting in You as our Lord and Saviour. We pray this prayer in Your holy name, Jesus. Amen.

    Thanks, Dee, for the good word.

    Great illustration and message Dee.
    Blessings.

    Thank you for your words this morning. I see little footprints on my balcony and the deck below; a tell tale sign that the little creatures that God created were here for breakfast.

    What a lovely picture you have painted, in words, about the beautiful birds.
    It also reminded me of a beautiful song, His eye is on the sparrow.
    How much He loves us, indeed.
    Thanks for sharing.

    Thank you so much for sharing about the birds that you can see in Canada, and it made me think of our family in Missouri who can watch so many birds on their deck. I loved the song and the scriptures that you shared. Keep on writing devotionals and sharing the Word of God.

    I know what you mean. At the lowest points of my life, that has sustained me: I cannot deny that He is God and I am His and that gives me incredible value. So what if nobody loves me. The God of the universe knows my name and I am precious in His sight. What else matters!. Bless you!

    Hello Dee
    Thanks for this little song, I sing that one quite often, and the same with the scriptures, especially when I am feeling inadequate. I also love the birds and their songs and it amazes me how there can be so many altogether and no one seems to bump into each other.
    God is love!!!
    God bless.

    Enjoyed your devotional! We, too, feed many birds, deer, wild turkeys, and a beautiful black/orange fox. What a pleasure. We live in the back woods and God sends his creatures for our entertainment. Not a day goes by that my husband and I don’t praise Him for this.
    Your devotional reminded me of a small china open book on my late mum’s bedside table. It read, “Said the robin to the sparrow, “I would surely like to know why these busy human beings rush about and worry so.” Said the sparrow to the robin, “Friend I think that it must be that they know no Heavenly Father such as cares for you and me.”
    Blessings.
