Christmas Mourning

John 3:16 – For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. (KJV)

The title isn't misspelled, and though the scripture relating to Easter perhaps seems out of place, the truth is that Christmas, for some, is a time of sadness, of mourning. Everyone around them is bustling with the Christmas spirit, decorating their homes, buying presents and special foods, baking Christmas cakes and cookies, looking forward to family get-togethers. Sometimes those whose loved ones are not with them would just as soon Christmas came and went without notice.

While Christmas is a celebration of Christ's birth, so, too, is the scripture as written in John 3:16, for in Christ's death and resurrection came the promise of life ever after — new birth — beyond life as we know it on earth.

This Christmas, let us remember those who mourn, who find this a tough time to get through. In celebrating Christ's birth, let us help them to find peace in remembering the life of their loved one — for God so loved the world, He gave us His only begotten Son.

Prayer: Our heavenly Father, as we celebrate the birth of your Son Jesus, we pray that we may be blessed with your grace in helping those who are without their loved ones find your peace which passes all understanding. In your name we pray. Amen.
