A Memorable Week

Listen while you read: "Now Thank We All Our God"1  (Lyrics)

Psalm 37:4 – Delight yourself also in the Lord, and He shall give you the desires of your heart.

During our Vacation Bible School this week, my prayer was that God would make our VBS a memorable experience. The theme for the week was prayer, and the curriculum worked through the Lord's Prayer in five sections, dealing with our daily bread, forgiveness, temptation, and so on. The skits, songs, crafts and Bible stories were all keyed in to the theme.

Forty-five minutes before our closing program at 11:30 on Friday, the lights went out. A phone call to the power company indicated that the outage was widespread and would likely take until after our closing program was over before it could be fixed. When I reported this, I asked people to pray, and they said, "Why don't you lead us right now?" So I said, "Lord, all week we've been talking about prayer; now we're putting You to the test. We really need the lights by 11:30, but we leave it up to You." In the meantime we did what we could. We laid alternate plans to get batteries for a tape recorder to play the song music, and we started to write out the words for our songs, instead of using the overhead projector. At about 11:15, the lights came on!

To God's honour, we were able to report to the parents, workers and kids that God doesn't just answer prayer in skits and Bible Stories, but also in real life. It was a memorable week. He answered that prayer, too!

Prayer: Thank you, O God, that You delight to hear and to answer the prayers of your people, as we stay our minds upon You. Amen.

  1. “Our God reigns”. I love seeing and hearing how God answers prayers. What a powerful example for all involved in that VBS!

    Wow Robin!!
What a testimony you have about the lights coming on at 11.15! God never stopped amazing me!!! I can just imagine the impact on everyone when prayer was answered! Not to mention the electricians.
    God is so good!
That story makes my day, thank you!!
    God bless.

    Hello Robin,
It was enjoyable doing a reread of one of your previous devotionals. Yes our loving Lord can sure amaze us how and when He answers our prayers. He certainly is ever deserving of our thankfulness.
Blessings for the writings you have done and your years of overseeing the devotional program.
