The Purpose Of The Church

Psalm 25:9 – He guides the humble in what is right and teaches them His way.

Some years ago a high school student came to see me concerning some very frustrating problems. She was disturbed about a number of things, but especially disturbed about the advisor of their literary society. This girl was a senior and had been a member of the literary society for over three years.

The new advisor was upsetting all the members. Would you believe that this advisor was suggesting, and even insisting, that the members read books, report on them, and then discuss them? The members were disturbed because they were neglecting the social times formerly enjoyed by the society. They did not want to read books and to spend time discussing them.As we talked, I asked the purpose of the society. The girl replied that it was organized to help high school students to become familiar with great literature. It was obvious to her that the society had drifted completely from its purpose.

It is not difficult to relate this incident to the life of most Christians and most churches. Many have drifted entirely from the true purpose. Pious activity has replaced powerful prayer and meaningful worship.

Prayer: Lord, help me to keep my life focused on true purpose and yielded to You. Amen.
