Rebuilding Moral Fibre

Listen to this devotional:

Isaiah 47:10-11 – You have trusted in your wickedness and have said, "No one sees me." Your wisdom and knowledge mislead you when you say to yourself, "I am, and there is none besides me." Disaster will come upon you, and you will not know how to conjure it away. A calamity will fall upon you that you cannot ward off with a ransom; a catastrophe you cannot foresee will suddenly come upon you. (NIV)

Over the years, we have observed a downward moral trend, as Western society has become more and more secular, and traditional values and laws based on the Bible have been overturned. Some have even tried to argue that the Christian faith of those who founded both Canada and the United States never existed and that the nations were not founded as Christian countries. But look what the founders had to say:

  • One of the Fathers of Canadian Confederation, Samuel Leonard Tilley, suggested the name, "The Dominion of Canada", having read the night before Psalm 72:8 – "He shall have dominion also from sea to sea, and from the river unto the ends of the earth." (KJV)
  • "It is impossible to govern the world without God and the Bible." — George Washington.
  • "It is the duty of nations, as well as of men, to own their dependence upon the overruling power of God and to recognize the sublime truth announced in the Holy Scriptures and proven by all history, that those nations only are blessed whose God is the Lord." — Abraham Lincoln.

But what those founding fathers said has been borne out in the recent economic collapse that has affected the whole world. People who thought, "No one sees me," issued mortgages to people who couldn't qualify for them, and a catastrophe we couldn't foresee suddenly came upon us, just as God promised. People who paid no attention to the biblical principles of honesty and integrity misrepresented their company's assets, and a multitude of stockholders took enormous losses in the ensuing collapse.

Both moral decline and increasing faith in God occur in individuals, one at a time. Each of us, individually, can play our part in the rebuilding of the moral fibre of our country, living with deep respect for God and passing on that principle to those around us, both in word and in action.

Prayer: Lord, help us not to stand helplessly by, wringing our hands and saying, "Ain't it awful!" Give us wisdom to know what we can do to restore the biblical principles that made our country great, and grant us the enabling of Your Holy Spirit to do it. We pray in Jesus' name. Amen.
