Lurking In A Fridge Near You

Listen to this devotional:

Psalm 19:12 – How can I know all the sins lurking in my heart? Cleanse me from these hidden faults. (NLT)

Opening the refrigerator, I was not expecting to be met with an overturned jar of beet root — yes, beet root — the kind packed in vinegar. The shelf was stained red, and the beet juice had dripped to the shelf below. I grabbed a cloth for a quick clean-up. But wait! Was this going to be a quick clean-up, or should I look further — beyond what my eyes could see? Something inside me sensed that I should look a little deeper — into the unseen crevices of the fridge. I began to take out the shelves. Lo and behold, I found the final resting place of the beet juice: through the vegetable crisper and at the bottom of the fridge.

As I was opening and closing the fridge to clean it out, I also became aware that when the fridge door was closed, the light did not remain on, but when the door was open, the light was on — and I was able to see the spill more easily.

Our spiritual walk can be like this, too. We become aware of sin in our lives, but do we really look into its depth, or do we just look at the surface and then go on with our day? Do we seek the Lord, asking Him to shed light onto it, or do we choose to close the door and remain in the darkness?

The spill in my fridge would not have gone away on its own; it would have remained. Likewise, sin in our lives does not go away on its own. We must acknowledge that it is there, and then repent and ask the Lord to cleanse us of it.

1 John 1:7 – But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin. (NKJV)

Prayer: Dear Lord, we want to walk in the light of Your love. Help us to remain in the light and shed the darkness and sin from our lives. We give ourselves to You again at this time and ask You to show us the sin lurking in our hearts. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
