A Signet Ring

Listen to this devotional:

Haggai 2:23b – "I will make you like a signet ring, for I have chosen you," declares the Lord of hosts. (NASB)

On a recent television show, comedian Chris Rock confessed astonishment upon discovering that an ancestor had fought in the American civil war, owned land, and even ran for political office. These were astonishing achievements for an American black man living in the late 1800s. Mr. Rock confessed that if he'd known these details sooner, he'd have lived his life differently.

I wonder what Zerubbabel thought when he heard Haggai's prophecy in today's Scripture. How did he live his life? Did he remind his offspring of their special destiny? Did they know that they could live above their current situations? Or did they find out by accident, decades later, that they were meant for greatness, because their family was part of the ancestry of the Lord Jesus Christ?

Signet rings leave a mark. We are all signet rings of one kind or another. What kind of mark are we leaving?

Psalm 78:4-8 speaks to the necessity of passing the Good News on to our children and our children's children. So then, what legacy are we leaving to our descendents? Will they value the choices we made? Will our story of faithfulness to the Lord Jesus Christ trickle down through our generations? Will our great-greats be surprised when they find out how we lived our lives? Will salvation through Jesus Christ be a regular continuum throughout each and every one of our generations?

Prayer: Lord, bless Your name! We thank You for the privilege of passing on the Good News to anyone who will listen. Help us to take it seriously, so that future generations will be able to say that they, too, know Jesus Christ as their personal Saviour. Let us leave a signet ring mark that is worthwhile. For Christ's sake, we pray. Amen.
