As The Wind Blows

Listen to this devotional:

John 3:8 – The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going: So it is with everyone born of the Spirit. (NIV)

During the night, as hurricane force winds blew through my yard, I worried about the flower bed that I'd tended so lovingly during the day. How could the plants possibly survive the fury of these winds?

Surprisingly, the next day, I found my tender young plants with their heads held high toward the healing rays of the mid-morning sun, literally smiling at me. The young plants had found strength in their tenderness by being flexible and moving with the wind, rather than resisting it.

What a lesson in life I saw here! I thought of the times when, faced with winds of challenge and change, I'd fought against them, trying to control the people and circumstances around me. Rather than submitting to the flow, I'd spent my energy fighting, only to find out later that I'd had no choice in the matter.

God's Spirit, like the wind, blows where He chooses. We hear the sound, but we do not see Him, yet we know He is there. If we yield to the Wind and are flexible, we become survivors. We find strength in our flexibility and in our yielding.

Prayer: Lord, as the wind of Your Spirit blows through our lives, may we yield to You, rather than struggling to have our own way. Teach us how to be strong in our tenderness and to be flexible when change is needed. Amen.
