Rejoice In The Spirit Of Giving

Listen to this devotional:

Luke 11:13 – If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him! (NKJV)

One day recently, enclosed with my Chatelaine magazine, I received a brochure from the Royal Canadian Mint with the title, "Rejoice, in the spirit of giving", in fairly bold letters. Then, in smaller letters, the following wording appeared: "Distinctive holiday gifts that last. Only from the Mint."

It was this last heading that set me to thinking and reminded me that at Christmas (soon to be upon us again), God sent the ultimate, distinctive holiday gift that lasts for a lifetime into eternity. Yes, He sent his Son Jesus as a lasting gift to us. What a reason to "Rejoice"! His gift to us is much more precious than silver or gold from the Royal Canadian Mint! The gifts from the Royal Canadian Mint will pass away, but thanks be to God, His gift will never pass away.

I know we are all going to give gifts to our loved ones, and that is wonderful, but as we give, let us remember to give good gifts that will last into eternity. Let us sow in the Spirit and reap everlasting life. Let us not just give as the world gives, but give to and serve the stranger, the needy, and those in need of salvation, just as God did when He sent His Son to us on that first blessed Christmas Day, because He loved us so much that He wanted us to have everlasting life. His precious Son came not to be served, but to be a servant of all.

Galatians 6:8 – For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life. (NKJV)

Prayer: Dear Father God, as yet another time for the celebration of Your everlasting gift approaches, may we be truly thankful for Your distinctive gift lasting into eternity. May we pass on the love You extended to us and give everlasting gifts to others. Help us to serve our families, our neighbours, and strangers on the street, so that they may come to know You and love You as their Saviour too. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
