Hebrews 13:8 – Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. (NIV)
There are some things in my life that are consistent — going to bed at night, rising in the morning, brushing my teeth, and performing other routine acts that prepare me for the day. Five days each week have always been designated as workdays. Saturday is set aside for doing those things that are considered weekly chores. Sunday has always been the day set aside for worship. This has been consistent in my life for as long as I can remember.
Consistency is the solid, trustworthy material that good, stable, dependable Christians are made of. It is the living example made from patience, determination, and strength always present. It overcomes the highs and the lows and enables one to show up for work, regardless of circumstances. It hangs in there, day after day, regardless of how boring the job is, until it is finished.
Galatians 6:9 – Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. (NIV)
As Christians, we should strive for consistency in our lives because God is consistent. The God of the Bible is the same, even though we have different perceptions of His character. People change and view God differently. The same God is revealed throughout the Bible, even if different authors emphasize one aspect of God's character more than others. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever. He never changes. Why should we be different? Others may perceive us differently, but the part of us that is Christ-like should remain consistent.
Prayer: Lord, we can depend on You to be there when we need You — steadfast, dependable, and available, and the same, yesterday, today, and forever. Help us to develop these traits in our lives. Amen.
