Real Life

John 10:10 – I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.

Do you remember the story of the Arab who had lost his way, travelling across the desert? After several days without food, and nearly exhausted, he came to an oasis. Searching for some scrap of food, he found a small bag. Now, under better circumstances, he would have been overjoyed as he opened the bag and found it was full of pearls, but his face fell as he realized that without bread, he would not live to enjoy pearls. Jewels, without life, are worthless. Yet we travel the desert of this world, intent on filling our hands with material goods, without realizing that we lack the Bread of Life, Jesus Christ. Jewels, without eternal life, are worthless. More and more, we read of people that we would think "have it made", like movie stars and athletes, turning to Christ to receive the life He gives. Having finally achieved the wealth and fame that the rest of us dream so fondly of, their lives are still empty and dead, and they know they are missing the most important thing. Jesus fills that vacuum with His abundant life.

Prayer: O Lord, You have created us with a hole, a vacuum, shaped in such a way that only You can fill it. We reach out to You for Your unique gift in Jesus Christ. Amen.
