Where Are Our Eyes Fixed?

Thursday, March 9, 2006

Matthew 17:8 – When they had lifted up their eyes, they saw no one but Jesus only. (NKJV)

On a recent trip to New York City, we had our eyes focused and looking forward towards the New York skyline, looking for the Statue of Liberty. The closer we drove, the more we searched the skyline. When we finally set our sights upon the Statue of Liberty, it was not dotted into the New York skyline, but off to the side, somewhat all alone on a piece of land. I was surprised to see it all alone; I had expected it to be part of the skyline of buildings.

There I was with my sights set on seeing the Statue of Liberty, but the direction I was looking was not the direction in which it was to be found. Many times we think we have our sights set on Jesus, but at the end of the day, we realize that we were really focused on the other things in our lives.

Isaiah 40:26 – Lift up your eyes on high, and see who has created these things, Who brings out their host by number; He calls them all by name, by the greatness of His might and the strength of His power; not one is missing. (NKJV)

Hebrews 12:2 – Looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. (NKJV)

What a day it would be if we were all to have our eyes fixed on Jesus!

Prayer: We give thanks and praise for Your sacrificial gift of Your Son on the cross. Please help us to keep our eyes focused on You, and on You alone. Amen.
