Excited!

Revelation 22:12-14 – Behold, I am coming soon, bringing my recompense with me, to repay everyone for what he has done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end. Blessed are those who wash their robes, so that they may have the right to the tree of life and that they may enter the city by the gates. (ESV)

Today, students — most of them — are glowing with pride and bouncing with excitement, as they have been online to find out their results. All the nervous energy, now expended, has been suddenly washed over by the jubilation of relief and success, for the majority. It reminded me of an earlier time when I looked up my results on a few sheets of A4 paper, pinned to the notice board, one on top of another, with my fiancée Caroline there to hold my hand for moral support.

I looked at the page where I thought the results should have been, but no, my name was not there! My nervous stress increased by the power of ten as I took a deep breath, paused, and flipped the page to look at the results on the lower sheets. No, not there either. Argggh! A small rush of blood to the head, a flushed face, and a near-apoplectic moment later was the thought, "Mommy, what am I going to do now?"

Just before I resigned myself to my fate, I decided to go through the lists again, just to check. Of course, I knew that I was not on the top sheet; I think that there were about two or three names there, so a cursory glance was sufficient. I worked my way down the sheets again, only to find my name on the sheet just above where I had originally started to look! Whoopee! What a joy to know that I had passed. What a relief, because I needed that qualification to teach!

The most important qualification in life is a free gift, given with grace and love by Christ to those who accept it: salvation. It qualifies us to go on to the next step in life, heaven! We are not to look down — but to look up!

Prayer: Lord, we rejoice that You turn no one down who comes to You looking for his or her salvation. We accept this gift of grace that is sufficient for us to enter into Your presence — to walk in reverence and awe with the King of kings on our way from today into eternity. Amen.
