Daniel 2:20b,23a – He knows all, does all: God of all my ancestors, all thanks! all praise! You made me wise and strong. (MSG)

Many times when I look around my comfortable home, I've thought of the tiny home that sheltered me for the first nine years of my life. We had no running water, indoor plumbing, or television, and the new wringer washer that arrived shortly after I started school was my mother's pride and joy.

Although I do think on these things from time to time, I realize that the physical attributes of our home weren't what shaped my adult life. In the corner of our living room, my mother had a favourite chair, and it was here that she studied her Bible by the light from the window. Across the room, near the fire, my dad tuned up his violin, and then played hymns and classical music well into the evening.

As readily as I can recall my early home, I remember the training I received there. Since childhood, I've found pleasure in the written word and have enjoyed music. My parents fostered these joys; also, they took time to read Scripture to us, pray with us, and take us to church. Although they will not be able to leave a large monetary legacy to their children and grandchildren, they will leave a treasured heritage, the riches many of their ancestors have found in knowing God.

Proverbs 27:24 – Riches do not endure forever, and a crown is not secure for all generations. (NIV)

Although we may not be able to leave our children a legacy of material wealth, we are able to leave immeasurable riches when we teach them who God is and the importance of having a personal relationship with Him.

Prayer: Dear God, thank You for the wisdom and strength we can find in You. Amen.
