Strong And Courageous

Joshua 1:9 – Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go. (NIV)

A young high school student came to me one day and said, "I don't know what to expect when I get to school. I am just entering high school and I'm scared." Further inquiry led me to ask him what he was really scared of, and he said, "I can't act like a Christian in high school."

At first I was quite taken aback by this statement. He felt that he couldn't go to high school and act like a Christian. So I asked him what he was afraid of. "They'll treat me like a geek or something. I don't want to be different."

That's the problem!

Too many of our young Christians feel that when they head into high school, they can't show a Christian witness. Our churches must combat that problem with the Word of God. No matter what the unknown, we need to hear the words spoken to Joshua many years ago: "Be strong and courageous." It takes a solid biblical foundation, and a willingness to be set apart, for young people to stand firm in their faith. This also applies to all Christians.

We need to be strong and courageous when we face the unknown. The witness of solid Christians facing trials and tribulations, as well as ridicule and persecution, will go a long way towards giving our young people encouragement to "be strong and courageous". Do we have confidence enough in God's Word, that when He says, "for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go", we can trust Him and take a step in faith? Let us take that step today, because God's Word is true, and other Christians are watching our example.

Prayer: Lord God, give us confidence that You will go with us every day. Increase our faith and make us courageous in the face of the trials and tribulations of daily living. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
