Doorknobs And Drawer Pulls

Listen to this devotional:
Listen while you read: "The Day Of Resurrection"1 (Lyrics)

Ephesians 3:9 – And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ. (KJV)

From our infancy, God made us to be curious creatures so that we could gather knowledge and eventually learn of Him. Have you ever watched a toddler stand on tiptoe and stretch his arm to reach a doorknob, or smile with happiness when she pulls a drawer open to find things inside? When our muscles are developed enough that we can move about, our minds want to go places, and we do.

My first memory of a glass doorknob was while I was being comforted by my grandfather. As I leaned against him while he rocked me back and forth in the rocking chair, my eyes were level with the shiny glass knob. I remember pointing to it because I had seen people use it to open the door and come in and go out. Before I could read, I pulled out a small nightstand drawer, and it fell on the floor with its contents all over, much to my excitement. My mother told me later that the book inside was her Bible. There were new things to discover both inside and outside of doors and drawers, and it was great fun to turn the brightly coloured door and dresser knobs. The closest that I came to real jewels was looking at or touching the shiny, clear glass knobs and colourful dresser pulls in family homes.

We use doorknobs to navigate our physical world, but there is a hidden, spiritual environment that cannot be accessed with a physical doorknob. We know nothing about this domain until we open a very special door in our heart and choose Jesus as our Saviour. God's light unfolds His hidden mysteries so that we can understand. He teaches by filling our minds with spiritual truths, and He forgives us of our sins so that we can reconnect with Him and receive eternal life in Christ. God's Word is true, and His promises are the best treasures of all.

Although in Scripture there are many complexities, don't let them stop you. Let us explore the Bible, because God promises that each one of us ordinary people can understand it when our hearts have accepted Christ. We might ask ourselves, "Which season of the big story do we understand the best? Which do we understand the least?" Now, let's pray for spiritual understanding, and continue to learn.

Prayer: Dear Lord, we praise Your holy name as You guide those who have not yet accepted Christ as their Saviour to open the door at the sound of His knock. We praise Your name as You continue to empower those in Christ to continue to open doors of understanding as revealed within Your Word. Amen.

I loved this, Karen! It was so fun to read with wonderful applications.
Makes me think of lots of pulls and doorknobs in my own life.

Dear Karen – thank you for your faithful writing ministry. Loved this devotional with the allegory of faith as opening a doorknob on our hearts. God bless you.

Thank you, Karen, such a good devotional. And you pay tribute to your grandfather in speaking of him comforting you, also your mother.

    Good Morning Karen
Thank you, I enjoyed your connection of doorknobs opening drawers to a special one that opens our heart’s door.
    God bless.

    Good morning Karen.
Thank you for your good devotional, I always enjoy your writings. The way things are going at the present time it seems like not too many people are listening to nor opening the door when Jesus knocks. may a change come about.
    Blessings.

    Hello Karen,
I just loved your devotional this morning! Great analogy you have written of door openings and the great door that is opened in our hearts when we receive Jesus into our daily lives. Beautiful happenings are then found in our lives, and they continue anew each day as we seek His love and guidance.
    Blessings for your writings.

    Good morning Karen,
I wondered where you were going with “doorknobs”. You have a very good memory of when you were young. Interesting how our memories work. I live in an older house which was my grandparents and I have those beautiful crystal doorknobs which I love. So when I turn them, I can think about my spiritual entrance into a live with Jesus and being willing to open doors to Jesus for others. Thank you once again for your insight and encouragement. Blessings.

Thank you for sharing your deep understanding.

    Thank you, Karen. And Blessings.
