Lost

Luke 15:8-10 – Or what woman, having ten silver coins, if she loses one coin, does not light a lamp and sweep the house and seek diligently until she finds it? And when she has found it, she calls together her friends and neighbors, saying, "Rejoice with me, for I have found the coin that I had lost." Just so, I tell you, there is joy before the angels of God over one sinner who repents. (ESV)

On my key ring, apart from my keys, I have a large penknife with assorted blades, screwdrivers, an adjustable spanner, a torch, a pair of travel scissors, a pen, and another smaller penknife, which is also a pair of pliers.

I wanted to use the pliers on my knife the other day, and, as looked for it, I found that it was missing! I have hunted up and down outside the house, in the street, outside work, and around the house. I have asked around, but no one has seen it. I may have lost it, and it is possible that I may have removed both, and not remembered what I did with them.

Sadly, as I suspect, someone may have taken the penknives off my keys, as I usually leave them on my desk during the day, with the door left unlocked.

Several things have been taken around the site lately, and we have been warned via the e-mail to keep our doors locked.

As I write this, my wife said to me, "You are not still thinking about that knife, are you?" It appears that I am! The words, "let it go", come to mind. I bought a replacement last week, but it is a newer model, and not so quirky as the old one, now defunct and missed. I mourn its passing and the affront to my personal space, even as I acknowledge that it is only a thing and not important.

Last week, as I looked, I became aware that Christ looks out for us. Inwardly, I was reminded of the parable in today's Scripture. Of course, He knows us, where we are, and what our sins are, but He wants to catch our attention to remind us that we are still His treasured possession, in whom He rejoices and which He will not give up.

Prayer: Lord, we rejoice that You treasure us, brood over us, want to clean us up, and pick us up out of the dirt of the day, to hold us close once more. We give You thanks and praise that You hold the keys of the kingdom, and nothing can detach us from Your love. Have Your way with us today, and shine Your light into our being to illuminate our path. Amen.
