New Humble

Micah 6:8 – He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the Lord require of thee but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God? (KJV)

Twenty-odd years ago, my friend and I and our two little daughters set out to deliver a car part to one of her husband's customers in a community about twenty miles west of our little town in Alberta, Canada.

Finding the village was not a problem, but instead of turning around and taking the same road back, we continued on the road to where it would eventually join up with the highway. However, a slight detour, two gabbing women, kids in the car, and a driver who was not what one would call "directionally gifted", soon put us in very unfamiliar territory.

Dusk was descending and a dog barked as we drove down the nearest driveway to ask directions. People peered sideways out the window, but, when I knocked, no one answered. It was very daunting as I humbly knocked one more time.

Finally, opening the door but a crack, a man gruffly gave me directions back to the highway. Apologizing, I said, "I'm sorry, but can you please tell me where exactly we are?" "New Humble," he replied. Ironic as that may sound, a sign on the side of a lonely little schoolhouse on our way back to the highway confirmed that it was so.

We are often "newly humbled" before God, when our journey with Him takes a turn in a different direction. We get busy and don't pay spiritual attention. We venture down roads that are sometimes scary, and we find ourselves in unfamiliar territory. It is then, when we humble ourselves and ask again for directions, that we find He will gladly guide us back.

Prayer: God, grant us the grace to come humbly before You when we find we have gone astray. Through Jesus Christ our Lord we pray. Amen.
