Of Course I Can!

Matthew 4:19-20 – Jesus said to them, "Come with me, and I will teach you to catch men." At once they left their nets and went with him. (GNB)

Recently, during children's time at church, our minister told the story of Jesus calling his disciples. She invited several children to act out parts of the story. They donned simple props to tell the characters apart. One young boy was asked to "fish" with a scarf, while he waited for Jesus to call him. He enlisted the help of his infant sister, who became the fish.

When all the actors were in place, our minister asked four-year-old Fraser to be Zebedee, the father of James and John. "Can you be Zebedee, Fraser?"

"Of course I can!" he answered enthusiastically.

I am sure the disciples were not ready to leave their homes and their lives behind, but they left immediately to follow Jesus. They didn't ask Jesus to wait so that they could sell their houses, tie up loose ends, and make preparations for a journey. They simply left to follow the Master. Would we do the same, or would we be too busy, too involved with our lives, with our earthly things, to hear Jesus when he called?

Jesus is calling each one of us. We may not be ready, we may not be willing, but we are all able to follow Jesus, wherever He may lead us.

Prayer: Loving Father, You sent Your Son to lead us. Help us to hear His call, and be ready to follow at a moment's notice. If we are ready, Jesus will lead us right to You. Amen.
