Wedding Band Mark

John 13:35 – By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another. (NIV)

When I was serving in the navy, I noticed something that always bothered me. Guys who were married would take their wedding rings off to go out to clubs. They did it so that the women they met there would not know they were married. These guys could get away with it because they had not been wearing their wedding bands very long (and most did not end up wearing them long after). I have only been married seven years now but I rarely take my wedding band off. One thing I have noticed when I do take it off is that there is a mark left on my finger from the ring. So while I could take my wedding band off, it would be very easy for people to tell that I was married, because it looks as if I still have my wedding band on.

Looking at my ring finger and the mark left there from years of wear, I got to thinking about my Christian life. Have I been a Christian who has taken the ring off so I can blend in with others? Or has there been a permanent mark left on me? Jesus tells us that men should be able to tell that we are his by the love we show one another. When someone looks at me, they should be able to tell by my actions that I belong to Christ. It should be plain to see, to everyone I come into contact with.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, we give thanks to you for the love you have shown us. We pray that we may show this love to the world, that through us people may see your glory. May we never hide it. In Jesus' name. Amen.
