Jonah 2:9 – Salvation comes from the Lord. (GNB)
Just ten days ago, we watched television coverage of New Year's Eve celebrations. The television networks marked this historic event by providing images from every continent on the globe. People could be heard shouting "Happy New Year" in many countries each using their own language. Celebrations took many forms. We watched parades, concerts, dances, speeches, and fireworks.
Our family grew more excited as the day progressed. This was particularly true when "Happy New Year" was proclaimed in North America. It happened in Hibernia off the shores of Newfoundland. We continued to watch, wait, and rejoice as the new millennium arrived in Newfoundland, the Maritimes, Eastern Canada, and finally here in Saskatchewan. We were present to celebrate an historic moment. We can now proudly claim that we have lived both in the 20th and 21st centuries.
I sensed relief on our children's faces when they realized that we still had electricity. The dreaded Y2K bug has not bitten. I believe that when the history of the 20th century is written, there will be a page about Y2K. The history books will describe humankind working together on the common goal of keeping the world safe from the Y2K bug in the year 1999. It will be noted that millions of dollars and countless hours were spent on this project. Our success will be recorded.
God must look down at his creation and wonder. God, who sent his Son Jesus Christ to guarantee our salvation, gave us a priceless gift. Unlike Y2K spending, the cost of this gift cannot be measured in terms of dollars or hours of labour.
Many people around the world do not realize that our safety and, indeed, our salvation are in God's hands. We as Christians do, however, have this certainty. We can rejoice as we walk into the new millennium hand in hand with God who sent his Son, Jesus Christ, to guarantee our safety and salvation.
Prayer: Loving God, You have guaranteed our safety. You have brought salvation to the world in the person of Jesus Christ, your Son. Help us to remember that this is your world. You will take care of your creation in the future as you have in the past. We are secure in you. Amen.
