One Wheel On My Bike

"One wheel on my bike and I am still rolling along…"?

Hebrews 3:12-14 – Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God. But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called "today," that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. For we have come to share in Christ, if indeed we hold our original confidence firm to the end. (ESV)

Not much changes, or so it seems; we just acquire a few more wrinkles and pounds, as the months — and years — race past. Life seems to be wearisome. Somehow we have lost the plot.

Sounds like Ecclesiastes?

Recently, I arrived at work with the perception that my cycling was getting harder to do. I looked my bicycle over, but I could not see anything jamming up the works. I thought, I need a holiday — which was bad, because I had just come back from one! Obviously, I needed more, which I have in hand.

I took a closer look at the bike to see what I could do to resolve my dilemma. It turned out that my rear axle bearing had been loosened previously when I had had a puncture and removed the wheel to fix it. The wheel meandered on the loosened bearing, and because it was out of alignment, the rim rubbed against the brake block.

When life becomes wearisome, it is for a good reason. We become jaded. It may be pride, anger, sorrow, disillusionment, something negative that we watch or read, or maybe stress caused by differences with those we love, work with, or maybe even worship.

Whatever the cause, we have a Creator God who knows our frailties of mind, body, and soul. He can see when we are out of alignment with Him and His way. If we recognize the need ourselves, when we are rubbing up against the brakes in some manner, and seek Him to be realigned, Jesus will fix us up and put us straight.

Then, even if our circumstances stay the same, Jesus in us will change our perspective, our resolve, our willingness, and our ability to overcome, so that we can continue on the Way, safe in Him, wherever that leads, up hill or down dale.

Prayer: Lord, You are faithful and willing, as well as just. You are able to divide bone and marrow, spirit and soul. You know our foibles. We grant You permission today to refine our hearts and minds by the power of the Holy Spirit so that we can be free to worship and praise You with wholeness of heart and a pure mind. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
