Strawberries

Listen to this devotional:

1 John 4:10 – This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. (NIV)

Have you ever observed the tiny little seeds on a strawberry? They are so small that we hardly notice that they are there as we eat the berries.

Yet for people who suffer from what is called diverticulitis, these tiny seeds can cause severe pain. I am one who suffers from this disorder, but I proceed to eat strawberries, as well as other seed-type fruits. In time, I get caught and suffer the consequences.

As I was looking at the seeds in the fruit we eat — some very tiny and others quite large — I thought of what some tend to call "little" sins and other "large" sins. I always thought that it matters not, whether large or small: sin is sin.

In the case of the strawberry, though, it is the smaller seeds that lodge in the pockets of the intestine and cause the most pain. In the same way, it might be said that sins that we think small and immaterial can fester and have dire consequences.

Sin, small or large, is sin. Even though small, we might think certain sins are hidden, but they are not. We need therefore to give thanks to God for His Son Jesus who died upon the cross that we who are not perfect should be saved from all our sins, even and especially the "little" ones.

Prayer: Gracious heavenly Father, we give thanks to You for our salvation. Direct our footsteps according to Your Word, and let no sin rule over us. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
