Psalm 136:1 – Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good. His love endures forever. (NIV)

When I wanted to be sure my children heard something, I often found myself saying the same phrases over and over. Sometimes I repeated instructions such as "Watch both ways when you cross the street," but sometimes my words were just as important but far more tender. "Good night, I love you," time and again I told them as I tucked them into their beds. Over the years they lived in our home, I probably repeated these same words several thousand times. Why? They conveyed such an important message, and it was essential that they knew how I felt as a parent.

Recently in my devotions, I was struck by how many times the psalmist repeated one phrase in Psalm 136. I believe the words are so important that the psalmist didn't want to take a chance on our not hearing them because we were too busy, too preoccupied, or just not paying attention. Twenty-six times we are told, "His love endures forever."

I'd like to invite each of us to repeat these words as we go about our work today. Repeat them often, and each time we do, let's remember God's unrelenting theme, "His love endures forever."

Prayer: Dear God, today as we go about our business and tonight as we prepare to sleep throughout the long night hours, help us to remember Your message: Your love endures forever. Amen.
