On Every Page

John 1:1 – In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. (KJV)

Lois Sweet's highly recommended new book, "Writing with Spirit", says all there is to say about writing. It covers everything from researching and interviewing to grammar and ethics, time management and selling. I can skim the text and choose what ideas to make mine, what methods to employ in my writing.

Ms. Sweet dedicated the book to her aunt, Hannah Moor, "who set the bar high", and the text is generously sprinkled with her life's writing wisdom. As I read the book in its entirety, I learn about a person, not just a method.

As Lois Sweet's book is to writing, so the Bible is to living. Too often, we use our Bibles as a method rather than as an instrument. Only as we read every page, do we discover the person of Jesus Christ spread throughout the book.

2 Timothy 3:16-17 – Every Scripture is God-breathed (given by His inspiration) and profitable for instruction, for reproof and conviction of sin, for correction of error and discipline in obedience, [and] for training in righteousness (in holy living, in conformity to God's will in thought, purpose, and action), so that the man of God may be complete and proficient, well fitted and thoroughly equipped for every good work. Prayer: Lord, forgive us when we rush through the Bible on the way to another life appointment. Forgive us for using Your Word as a method, and not as an instrument of life. Forgive us for reading only the easy sections, the pretty parts, and the happy thoughts. Give us courage to meet both You and Your Son, face to face, on every page of Your living Word. In Jesus' name. Amen.
