The Lord Of Our Valleys

Isaiah 40:4 – Every valley shall be raised up, every mountain and hill made low; the rough ground shall become level, the rugged places a plain. (NIV)

In two short days last spring, my husband took sick, cancer was discovered in a close family member, my dad was taken in to the hospital, my husband's uncle died, a cousin was diagnosed with a brain tumour, our car was involved in a hit and run while it was in a parking lot, and I learned that, unless I had immediate laser surgery, I had a ninety percent chance of going blind.

I won't say that I went through this time without a tear being shed or asking God a question or two. Are you up there, God? I prayed, but for weeks no answer came. Some days, the pain and hurt I was experiencing blurred my vision, and there were times when the very thought of God provoked feelings of doubt, and left me with more questions. My spiritual valley sent me to Scripture to try to find answers. Here I reread the passage where Jesus went to the garden to pray before His crucifixion. He, too, had much to face, and in the garden He expressed His heavy heart to His heavenly Father.

Luke 22:40-43 – On reaching the place, he said to them, "Pray that you will not fall into temptation." He withdrew about a stone's throw beyond them, knelt down and prayed, "Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done." An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him. (NIV)

The Scripture doesn't say God removed the difficult situation Jesus was facing, but it does say an angel came from heaven and strengthened Him.

In life, we are sometimes asked to go through troublesome times, times of questions, and times when we feel like asking God, Why? When these times come, God, just as He did for His own son, will go through these trials with us. He will also send His angel to comfort and strengthen us. He will meet us in our personal valleys.

Prayer: Dear God, thank You for caring for Your children. Thank You for Your love, Your plan, and Your provision for each one of us. Amen.
