Addicted

Listen to this devotional:
Listen while you read: "O Zion Haste"1 (Lyrics)

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 – Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body. (NIV)

I've heard that in Alcoholic Anonymous meetings, attendees must stand up, say their names, and state that they are alcoholics. I need to start a Chocolates Anonymous or a Carbohydrates Anonymous where I would stand up and say, "My name is Sharon and I'm a Carb/Chocolate Addict!" I love both: a perfect day of eating for me would be donuts or pastry for breakfast, pasta/hamburger/fries/pizza for lunch, and a brownie, chocolate cake, or Rocky Road ice cream for dinner.

I don't eat that way every day, but it's tempting. It seems that carbs are the only thing that fills me up. I've investigated many diet plans and even tried a few of them, but I'm always hungry, and the diet fails. Well, honestly — I fail at using the diet.

In their writing, both Solomon and Paul include cautions against gluttony. There are frequent admonitions in the Bible about caring for our bodies as holy temples. I have numerous notes, especially in the New Testament, where I've written "diet!" next to a Scripture.

Galatians 5:16 – So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature. (NIV)

This Scripture advises us to put everything in our lives, including our diet, under the control of the Holy Spirit. If I would commit my day to Him each morning, and then each minute throughout the day when I'm tempted to eat in an unhealthy way, I could control my appetite. That's a decision that I need to make day by day, sometimes minute by minute. Anybody with me on that one?

Prayer: Father, help all of us to submit our bodies to You, not only for our appetites and diet, but for any action that we take. Thank You, Father, for helping us. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.

    Well done. Please write again.

You and I are evidently related, Sharon.

Thank you, Sharon, for today’s devotion thoughts.

Thanks for a wonderful message we need Holy Spirit all the time.
    God bless you.

Hi Sharon, I am with you!
Praying that God in his mercy will give us strength to live a healthier life.

Sharon, thank you for sharing your experience with us in this devotional. May God strengthen your resolve. Blessings.

    Hello Sharon,
A book you may find useful is Eat To Live by Dr. Joel Fuhrman.
It could possibly help you curb your problematic food addictions.

I love bread, all kinds of bread …. but I’ve heard that if your house is a mess then so is your brain – so doesn’t that mean I can’t get enough of Jesus, the Bread of Life??

Thank you, Sharon. You are right. We need to submit to God in all areas of our life. Our bodies were bought with a price, the death of Jesus, God’s own son! Praise be to God.

I’m with you all the way! Thanks for writing this devotion. It gives me a fresh perspective to begin my week with. As you say, day by day, minute by minute. It’s definitely a challenge for me. Blessings on your week.

Thank you, Sharon, for your encouraging words. I too struggle with chocolate and carbs. I’ll mark Gal 5:16 and use it to help me win the “battle of the bulge” when I feel the need to indulge!

    Hi Sharon,
Thank you for sharing. As good as they may taste carbs and sugar are diabetes’s best friends, As you mentioned we all have areas in our lives that need to be continually yielded to the Holy Spirit. Bless you for sharing with us today!

    Dear Sharon,
Thank you for sharing this topic. You definitely aren’t the only one out there, alone. You have given all of us who struggle with the tasty carbs and sweets, a call to deal with this issue in a Godly way. I never wanted to call it an “addiction,” but it can be, even when we don’t want to think about it that way. Thank you for the scriptures. What a difference it would make if “I” committed my day to the Lord each day right from the moment I arise. What a way to start with a blessing in fellowship with the Lord.

    Greetings Sharon,
Enjoyed your devotional this morning and suffer the same addiction with my love of chocolate and sweet goodies!
I must get stronger in my resistance to consume these items by seeking help from our Lord who is ever present and eager to help us. Our Lord is truly awesome with the love and care He showers on us.
    Blessings to you.
    (B.C.)

    Good Morning Sharon,
I can so relate; I am a sugar/carb addict too.
    It is definitely an addiction!
I know my binging is a sin, but I sometimes choose to sin and don’t stop to pray.
I prayed again last night for help today from the Holy Spirit.
It is sometimes minute to minute I need strength to not give in to my cravings.
You have encouraged me today, thanks for your sharing!
    Wishing you God’s many blessings.

    Oh dear!
Do I not share your grief Sharon?!!!
It seems at times that even prayer fails to hold me back from indulging in a sinful dessert.
God knows that I have been yo-yo-ing weight-wise from earlier on in my adolescence; I even went through partial gastrectomy. And, yet I seem to have managed to regain my stomach size to about pre-surgery size.
It has been and continues to be a daily challenge to abide by a healthy diet. And yes, I keep on praying that one day (now that I’m approaching 60), I will get the discipline to eat “properly”.
Be well and keep up the fight – at least that’s what I tell myself every day. Thank you for your encouraging message! In faith,

Dear Sharon, Thank you for your thoughts about ‘diets.’ I belong to a fellowship called ‘Overeaters Anonymous.’ It is a spiritual fellowship based on the fact you speak of, that ‘I can’t do it by myself. I need God’s help.’
One of the things we Don’t do is name any of the foodstuffs for fear of triggering this physical disease. “The disease is physical. The cause is emotional. Our solution is spiritual but not religious.’ I was so pleased to hear your honesty, open-mindedness and willingness, (H.O.W.) in today’s devotional. Yes, you and I are indeed, ‘addicts.’ We use food the way alcoholics use drink to numb ourselves from our reality. (It’s not what I’m eating – it’s what’s eating me) or (Stuffing my face rather than Facing my stuff), which I can only do with God’s help, one day at a time.

I can relate so much to what you wrote. I love the Lord with all my heart and try to control my addiction to sugar but cannot commit. I wondered why and I think it is an addiction, just like alcohol, tobacco and coffee.
So last year I went on a supervised 8 day fast.
I made a commitment to the nutritionist not to eat sugar for 21 days.
And…. I did it. I was so proud of myself. But then slowly a little here and a little there and first thing you know, I am back at it.
So, I am going on another week of fasting, but this time I will invite God into my fasting and will ask Him to remove the temptation every time the desire comes.
I know now that I was relying on my own strength and did not think of abandoning this to Him.
I will only be eating fruits and that is good.
The reward is less mood swings, less fatigue and more inner peace. I lived it.
Thank you for taking the time to read my thoughts on your serious comments.
God bless you and let us keep each other in prayer dear sister in Christ,
    (Ontario, Canada)

Not to brag, but I have lost 25lbs in the last 3 months. How? From that book I mentioned last month: Switch on your brain by Dr C Leaf. I realized at one point that I am addicted to sugar. If I do not eat sugar, I am content, not hungry, not looking for the next something to eat. I had dessert one night. Later, that old familiar feeling of wanting something to eat surfaced again. It was the sugar talking. So, I said NO and went to bed. Next morning the sugar had worn off and was no longer calling. I had been telling myself all kinds of lies about eating and after reflecting on that, decided it was a matter of self-control instead of being out of control. Finally, I am free to take authority over my body and treat it in a healthy manner. I hope my experience will help you also and I do recommend the book. It is very enlightening, and Dr Leaf is a Christian as well as being a neuro-research scientist and therapist. May the Lord give you grace in your struggle. Blessings.

    Dear Sharon,
Your heartfelt devotion touched me deeply, as I can totally relate. All my life, I’ve struggled with a food addiction.
In my culture, we ALWAYS ate…Happy, sad, or in between we were always around the table enjoying homemade goodies. I was bullied as a child for being fat, and it hurts to this day. I cried myself to sleep more times then I care to remember…
I’m now 60 yrs. old, but it wasn’t until 2005 that I could start to begin to resolve my addition. My group at church was preparing for a mission trip, and we fasted in prayer to receive God’s blessing upon our trip.
I was terrified of fasting, as I had never thought I could accomplish this major feat. My world revolved around eating and planning my next meal. I literally thought about food ALL day and night.
The fasting process was not a walk in the park, and I’m sure God was getting tired of my asking for His help and peace. Ever faithful and gracious, my Lord pushed me through. I was in constant prayer because EVERY time I got hungry of thought of food, I prayed! My knees were sore from praying SO much!
It worked, and I felt as though food didn’t have the same power over me.
I still struggle now, as I simply LOVE to eat and cook! But knowing that God’s power is stronger than any other power on this earth, has released me from my addiction.
In our daily struggles, God is with you and me. He will always pick us up when we need Him most. He fills us with His Love and Power and that is the most satisfying.
I’m here to support you Sharon. Whatever you need, I would love to assist you in any way.
Thank you again for sharing your heart with today’s devotion.
    Love and blessings.

Anybody with me on that one? I am, Sharon!!
    (NV)

Dear Sharon, I fully understand. I am going to try your suggestion starting right now. warmly,

    Hello Sharon,
I can really relate to what you are saying in your writing today!
I, too, feel I am addicted to carbs, especially chocolate — actually almost anything sweet! I saw a picture of myself today from the side and thought, I really HAVE to lose weight.
A few months ago, I even had a heart attack and believe my diet (as well as stress) probably had a lot to do with causing it. And I STILL am having a hard time staying away from the carbs (talk about addiction!).
This morning I asked the Lord to help me. I really do want to improve my health, but it is a constant battle, as you mention. I KNOW the Lord can help me and I will look to him every morning (and throughout the day) for strength.
Thanks for your writing today. It’s just what I needed.

I am with you 100{8395b6ce96fcf25a14d80edc3b65c36a8995b6c1ba5f8c16ac11d8adaa79f35b}! I have the same addiction for chocolate, fries etc.
Every morning ask God to guide all my activities. Thank you for this devotional.

Hi Sharon, I know how you feel about diet. I have slowly introduced food changes to my body, like eliminating dairy and eating less sugar and carbs, but sometimes l just want to eat unhealthy. You are not alone! Blessings.

    Hi Sharon,
I’m with you on that one, I have chocolate addiction problems as well, if I don’t have any around I can cope, but if there is a bar in the house I will eat it. My best solution is to just not buy any.
Thanks a lot for writing. I always enjoy your devotionals.
    Blessings.
