Serving In The Spirit

Friday, August 31, 2001

Luke 10:38-41 – As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet listening to what he said. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, "Lord, don't you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!" "Martha, Martha," the Lord answered, "you are worried and upset about many things." (NIV)

Do we personally involve ourselves with too many things in our church and stop worshipping the Lord in the true Spirit? In attending many functions in the church, we may think we are being a blessing to God and ourselves, but are they taking our attention away from God?

In today's scripture passage, we find Martha asking Jesus why her sister Mary could just sit and listen to Him talk. Martha seemed burdened with the preparations of looking after her guest, and was unable to give undivided attention to her Lord.

Our lives today can be so rushed that there is no time for spiritual involvement. We become so busy doing things for Jesus that we are not spending enough time with Him. Let us watch that our service does not become self-serving.

This is a reminder not only to you, the reader, but also to me, the writer, for sometimes my thoughts become filled with the issue of writing. My prayer is that it is the leading of the Holy Spirit that brings me here and not my own ambition.

Prayer: Dear Lord, we pray that You will be the focal point in our lives. Let your Spirit flow within us, so that we will serve only You in spirit and in truth. Keep our minds free from the clutter that can so easily overwhelm us. Teach us to be true to You alone. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
