A Dog By Any Other Name

1 Peter 4:16 – However, if you suffer as a Christian, do not be ashamed, but praise God that you bear that name. (NIV)

About three years ago, our daughter, who had recently returned home from university and was living in the new apartment we had fixed up for her in our basement, asked if she could bring a dog home. We already had one dog. She had told us about this dog, which she had bought as a pup when she was away at school. However, when she told us it was a pit bull, my husband said, "If she brings that dog anywhere near this house, I'll shoot it!" (His bark is much worse than his bite)

She did eventually bring the dog home. Her name is "Precious". She's actually an American Staffordshire Terrier and looks just like the dog in the Little Rascals — complete with a brown patch over one eye. She is the most loveable and affectionate dog we've ever owned (we've had three others). She's managed to go from staying in the basement apartment to sleeping on our bed!

A name can be very important. Jesus' disciples acquired a name that has stuck until this very day. The more people watched them, the more they were reminded of Jesus Himself. "The disciples were first called Christians at Antioch." (Acts 11:26 NIV)

When the world looks at us, do they see Jesus Christ, the One whose name we bear?

Colossians 3:17 – And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him. (NIV)

Prayer: Heavenly Father, You have called us to be Your people. We praise and thank You for all Your goodness. Help us to be more and more like Jesus. May all that we say and think and do bring glory and honour to Your holy name. Amen.
