Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep

Saturday, March 1, 2025
Listen to this devotional:
Listen while you read: "Lord I Want To Be A Christian"1 (Lyrics)

Psalm 5:1-3 – Give ear to my words, O Lord, consider my sighing. Listen to my cry for help, my King and my God, for to you I pray. In the morning, O Lord, you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before You and wait in expectation. (NIV)

When I was very small, my mother taught me these words as a bedtime prayer:

Now I lay me down to sleep,
    I pray the Lord my soul to keep;
If I should die before I wake,
I pray the Lord my soul to take.

Pretty heavy words for a preschooler — but this short prayer remains in my memory, so it must have at least taught me that it is important to talk to God regularly.

I still sometimes pray as I'm preparing to sleep, though not with those same words. More often, however, it is my habit to pray as I'm preparing to get up in the morning. I'm sure those aren't always the most coherent prayers, but it is my way of checking in, of re-establishing the connection, of saying "Good morning, Lord!"

Not long ago, I woke up and remembered, "Now I lay me down to sleep." Just for fun, I changed it up a little. Then, I hopped out of bed and wrote it down. I must confess that I like mine better than the original!

Now I stir me up to rise
I pray the Lord will guide my eyes,
    My ears, my hands, my thoughts, my talk;
I pray You'll show me where to walk,
And lead me in Your path so true,
And show me what I ought to do.

I pray that as I hear Your voice
I will obey in every choice,
And in Your strength I will hold fast
    Until the sun goes down at last;
And when I lay me down to sleep,
I'll trust You, Lord, my soul to keep.

Whatever words you use, it is always a good idea to check in with God at the start of every day. Now, please join me in one more little prayer:

Prayer: Lord God our Father, help us to reaffirm our connection to You this very moment, and to stay close by Your side all day long. You have promised to guide us; remind us to follow. If we seek first Your kingdom, anything else we need You will provide. Amen.

That prayer. It was a little scary to think you might die before morning.
I like your prayer, and it prepares us first the day ahead also. Thank you.

    Dear Angie,
    WONDERFUL!
    Please keep writing.

    Loved your devotional Angie,
It brought me back to my childhood prayers.
    Have a blessed day!

    What a beautiful, thoughtful poem!
I wrote it into my journal giving you the credit.
    Shalom.

Thank you, Angie. I am passing your special morning prayer to my friends in my Bible study group. God bless your day.

Love your poem, Angie. Very appropriate for any morning.
I also learned the little one as a child. It was nice to be reminded.
    Thanks for your story.

My mother prayed the same words with me every night. Then she would add – God bless and name close family and friends – comforting. We would also sing at least one hymn.

I loved your revision of our bedtime prayer, Angie. (Yes, I also prayed the same prayer every night.) You’ve revised and revived it into a very meaningful “Good morning, Lord!” prayer.

    Good morning, Angie,
I love your edited morning prayer. Thank you for today’s devotion.
    (Ontario)

Great words! Thank you for sharing. I’m forwarding to my friends.
Morning prayers are such a nice way to start each day.
    (Manitoba)

I really appreciate your words in the prayer. My Grandma always had me kneel beside the bed and say your first prayer, thank you for reminding me. Would you mind if I print your prayer? Blessings.

Thanks for the revised prayer in the Presbyterian devotional today, Angie!
With your permission I’d like to copy it and share it with my grandson.
    Blessings on your day!

    Hello Angie,
I used to pray that same prayer when I was a child, taught to me by my mother.
    I like yours better.

How thoughtful and all-purpose your morning prayer is. It hits the spot for me.
Thanks, Angie, for sharing this through the devotional.
    (BC)

Angie….I agree, and I like your prayer better. I hope you don’t mind if I share it.
It is a beautiful prayer to start the day, to acknowledge our Lord and to ask his guidance throughout the day and night. Thank you for sharing it with us.

Thank you for your wonderful prayer! I too pray before rising most mornings, but also little chats with God throughout the day. With your permission I will use it and share.

Thanks for sharing this. I, too, had ‘Now I lay me down to sleep’ as a prayer that was embroidered, framed, and hanging on my bedroom wall. I still say it at night, and I believe those words say a lot. The original is long gone, but the words stay with me.

I like yours, too. I love to start my day with the Lord in my comfy chair. I have such a lovely view from my window and often watch the sunrise from our back deck. So blessed and so grateful for that!

    Good morning, Angie!
    Amen!
Thank you for your message today and your beautiful prayer. May the Lord bless and keep you always.

    Dear Angie Williams,
A beautiful, Holy Spirit inspired prayer.
    I love it.
Keep the faith and God bless,
    (Ontario)

    Good morning, Angie.
This is beautiful and I like your version very much. I too write poetry as God gives me and I really enjoyed how you put in words what is or should be on our hearts each day.
    God bless.

Thank you for this message this stormy morning.
I was taught this prayer as a child, and it came to mind again just this week.
It does, in simple terms, express our reliance on God. I will print your version and keep it.
    God’s Blessings to you.

Angie: thank you for today’s devotional. That too was my prayer as a child, faithfully repeated each night at bedtime. It was also taught to my kids and grandkids. Thanks too for the “new take” on it. May I have permission to share it on with a couple of groups on Facebook?
    (ON)

I love your version of the prayer better also!
I always say a prayer before going to sleep, but didn’t think about praying before I got up in the morning. I always pray with meals, but now I will be praying before I get up. What a great way to start the day!
    (BC)

Greetings Angie and thank you for this morning’s devotional. It was delightful reading that morning prayer you composed. I’m sure the Lord hears a variety of different prayers throughout the day and night, and we need be so thankful that He is ever ready to hear from us and give a response to our pleas. Blessings for writing and I look forward to seeing a writing from you again.

Angie, I too was taught the child’s bedtime prayer, with the scary last sentence. In later years, I learned and taught kids a simple song as a morning prayer. “Good morning God! This is your day. I am your child. Show me your way.” This song is often in my awakening mind and heart as an 84-year-old child.
Thanks for your good words today.

    Good morning, Angie,
I love your morning prayer. It is so uplifting and insightful. I totally agree with connecting with God to start my day and being grateful for all He provides me each and every day.
Thank you for sharing your prayer and encourage us to start our day walking with God and listening for his guidance and comfort. Blessings.

    Good morning, Angie,
I don’t usually reach out but the prayer you wrote in your devotional for today touched my heart. I saved it to use moving forward.
    Thank you for sharing.
May God Bless you and keep you,
    (OH, USA)

Thank you, Angie, for your beautiful prayers. I very much appreciated your devotional today.
Just this week when pain took away my words at prayer time, my childhood prayer, the same as yours, popped into my head and I’ve been incorporating it into my nightly prayer ritual since. I also like your version.
Again, thank you and may God continue to bless and guide you.

Oh Angie, I sure like your morning version! I think I’ll adopt it if that’s ok with you.
When my own children were young, I taught them the original bedtime prayer but with a change… Instead of “die before I wake…”, what I taught them was “Thy angels guide me through the night and wake me with the morning light”. To me it was more comforting for little ones.
Have a wonderful day! You’ve made mine brighter.

    Dear Angie
Thank you so much for your very well timed (God timed) devotional. I’m always amazed how God can use complete strangers to encourage our new day.
I was so impressed with your “new” version of a prayer I too was taught many, many years ago. I still appreciate the words, but I agree with you, yours is better!
Thank you for sharing and I look forward to more devotionals submitted by you!
    God bless you!

    Good Morning Angie,
Just wanted to say thank you for this morning’s devotional. I read them every morning as my way of checking in with God. Yours this morning was very special to me as I too was taught that little prayer by my Mom when I was a very young boy in Saskatchewan. It pops into my head quite often when I get into bed and talk with God.
I love your version of it and plan on sharing it with our fellowship group when we meet in March. Thank you again.
    Blessings,
    (BC)

    Thank you, Angie.
Your devotion brought back memories of my mother teaching me this same nighttime prayer . As a very young girl, I remember kneeling by my bed with my older sister and twin brother repeating this prayer.
My twin brother recently died and is now with our Lord, joining my sister who died a few years ago.
I much appreciate your new prayer. So appropriate to begin a day. With your permission it’s going to be added to my daily prayers.
May God continue to richly bless you.

Good morning, it’s a very nice day.
Thank you for writing this devotional.
    I appreciate your morning prayer.
    Getting all stirred up.
    Thanks.
Now I have to pay attention.
All day, to what I do and how I react.
    Thanks.
    Blessings.

I wonder if you remember the second part of that little prayer (which I also prayed as a child, each night). The second part is not Biblically sound. In case you didn’t learn that part, I will tell you, for a laugh:
“There are four corners on my bed.
There are four angels at my head:
    Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.
Bless the bed that I lie on.”
Now, I love the way you have reworded that prayer, and I will print it and post it on my bathroom mirror for a time.
Thank you! Grace and peace to you.

I love your prayer Angie, thank you very much. Louise

    Thank you,
This was so beautiful and uplifting.

Love the “morning“ version of an old nighttime favorite.
    Blessings.

Thank you, Angie. Yes, your version is definitely better and so much more useful.

I very much prefer your version of the prayer as well! I learned and taught my children the same old prayer, but I always thought it a little heavy for preschoolers. But neither I nor my children every questioned the prayer. And it does stay. Now I need to memorize yours.

Hello Angie – I wanted to let you know that I really enjoyed reading your devotional today. I remember that prayer also from childhood and I often thought it was kind of sad for a child to refer to possibly dying before they wake up again. I like your version much better. Thanks for sharing.

Dear Angie, What an amazing Devotional today, I really enjoyed it. I too, grew up as a child learning the prayer “Now I lay me down to sleep” I still know it today and I’m 77 years old. Your new prayer is awesome, thanks for sharing.
I look forward to more Devotionals.
    Blessings to you,
    (Ont)

Love your new version of the old prayer.
    Thank you for sharing.

Well, if that isn’t a wonderful devotional, I don’t know what is!
    Thank you,
    (Texas)
