Freedom From Anxiety And Fear

Philippians 4:6-7 – Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. (NKJV)

I love to travel with my husband, whether it is by road, ship, or plane, but for some unknown reason, for the last two years of my mother's life, I developed a fear of flying. The thought of going to the airport and getting on a plane filled me with fear and dread. I couldn't understand it — I was an avid traveller. What was worse was that I couldn't travel to be with my mother, who lived 2,370 kilometres (about 1,470 miles) away in Hollywood, Florida, USA. I saw her often on FaceTime whenever my sister or her faithful friends helped her, but it was too far to travel by car, so flying it had to be. Not being able to get up and go was creating even more anxiety in my life, and I knew that I had to stop these fears from taking over for good. I also knew that fear has no place in the life of a Christian, but I just couldn't shake it off — it was overwhelming.

After wrestling with my deep fears on my own, I took them to my heavenly Father, Who was waiting to act. I asked God to help me and to fill me with His strength so that I could get on a plane to go and see Mom — fearlessly. He did! When I woke up the next morning, I felt renewed and fearless and ready to book my flight — but I received a call from my sister that Mom had passed that morning. I booked my flight and went to her — late, but I went. But why did it take me so long to ask God when I knew better?

2 Timothy 1:7 – For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. (NKJV)

1 John 4:18 – There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love. (NKJV)

Philippians 4:13 – I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. (NKJV)

God is the answer to all our anxieties and fears. Letting go and letting God is the only way to freedom from anxiety and fear in our daily lives.

How are you feeling today? Have you been experiencing any anxiety or fear recently? Then let us pray:

Prayer: Almighty God, only You can free us from the burden of our anxiety and fear. Release us from them and grant us the grace and mercy to walk freely from these thorns in our flesh. In the name of Jesus Christ, we pray. Amen!

Thank you for sharing this encouraging devotional with us today. Virtual hugs flying your way as you mourn the physical death of your Mother. Now she lives eternally with the Lord of glory. Blessings and prayers.

    Yvonne:
Thank you for sharing your story and for praying that God will overcome any fear or anxiety in me that I am not adequate for the given task.

What a beautiful testimony, Yvonne! Undoubtedly, our cares and anxieties are opportunities for God to display His love, and for us to personally experience His potential, and so timely! You’ve provided a wonderful example as proof of God’s faithfulness.

    Great message!
Sadly, we woke to hear of the plane crash in Washington DC.
However, the percentage of crashes compared to successful flights is low, and that an Inquiry will work on this one.
    Have a great evening!

    Good morning, Yvonne,
I have always had a fear of flying and do fly when necessary. I have not flown since COVID because I haven’t had any reason to. I am sure my feelings of fear are worse because lots of friends have got COVID on their travels. I am not a traveller by nature. I appreciate you sharing your deeply felt feelings and I believe that it is difficult especially around your mother. God works in mysterious ways, and I wonder why He didn’t prompt you to pray about it earlier. The timing seems an important part of your message. These are beautiful passages from the Bible which are a cornerstone to faith. Thank you. Blessings.

Thank you for writing this devotional.

Ear problems, Brain disorders, Mental conditions, Spiritual.
    Yes prayer.
    But Wait..
    And answer might be no.
Thank you for writing this devotional.

Dear Yvonne, there sure are times in our lives when fear becomes so dominant and prevents us from doing important things we need to get done. It is so uplifting to know that you were able to overcome your fear by getting strength through trust in the Lord and following His word. I was very pleased to see Philippians 4:13 listed in your devotional as that scripture has been my mantra for several years. When I had a severe accident and was told by the doctor that I would not walk on my own again, I relied on that scripture to do daily physio and after several months walked on my own into the doctor’s office and his remark was “You proved me wrong”. Our Lord certainly can do miracles in our lives when we put our trust in Him. Blessings for your special writing and my sincere sympathies to you in the passing of your Mom.

Thank you, Yvonne. I’ve experienced the same situation. It’s great when we “let go and let God” deal with it.
