A Revisited Devotional from September 12, 1998
Isaiah 55:11 – So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it. (KJV)
For many years I worked for the Post Office. I was always intrigued by letters that would come to people, especially letters which you could tell were from friends or relatives. At the end of my postal career, I reverted to being a letter carrier, and it was fascinating to watch the faces of people when I handed them their mail and they flipped through to see what they had.
My greatest joy was seeing the face of some elderly person light up when they realized they had a letter from an old friend or relative. They would positively glow. Often, they would tell me who the letter was from and who the person was. The next day, I would sometimes be invited in for tea and hear all about Aunt Mary or the long-lost son or daughter.
Now, I have changed professions; I am a minister of Word and Sacrament in the Presbyterian Church. As one of my best friends said to me the other day, "Really you haven't change professions; just the Boss is different." It took me a while to figure this out, but then I realized I still do carry the Word to people. This time the Word comes from a loving heavenly Father. The Word now is much more than a pick-me-up, even though it can be that. Now, the Word is a matter of life and death, an invitation to a party, an invitation to come home and to join Abba (Daddy) at His banquet table.
When you think about it, each of us, as Christians, shares in this awesome responsibility to deliver God's Word. We deliver it to anyone who will hear: friends, neighbours, relatives, and, yes, even strangers.
Prayer: Lord, help me to deliver Your Word to Your people — not my word, but the Word You wish to speak through me. Help me to remember that even though I may see no reaction to speaking the Word, You promised through Isaiah that Your Word will not come back void. In the name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.

Thanks David, blessings.
I am glad that devotional was revisited. Thank you for that.
God’s word is comforting, and we can do this in many ways, words, and actions.
David, I knew you were the author of this devotion even before seeing your name. I hope you are enjoying retirement. Are you still involved in the church?
God Bless.
Good morning, David,
Thank you for today’s devotional. It spoke to my heart, and I am grateful for this particular message today.
Blessings!
David, how great is your awareness of being a deliverer of the Word… the Good News! You certainly qualify for that. Postmen always amaze me in how they walk their delivery routes and carefully deliver, no matter the obstacles like weather, mean dogs, or traffic. So we also should also be faithful and press on as faithful servants. Thanks for your good thoughts.
Thank you for writing this devotional.
The many ways we pass on the word.
Sometimes we know.
Sometimes we don’t know.
Thank you.
Blessings.
Thank you, David, Your devotional reminds me of the personalized letters I receive from God – delivered in surprising, timely, and unexpected ways.
I’m sure God delights to see my happy response, just as you were delighted to see the happy reactions of mail recipients. I’m sure they, in turn, were touched by seeing your interest in their stories.
“I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.” Ps. 27:13
Great to see you “back” David.
So good to see so many devotionals revisited. The messages are the same, and best of all, knowing the authors had to be contacted to give their approval.
It means so many of us are still around.
Trust you are keeping well.
Good morning, David,
I guess I wasn’t quite awake when I read the title because I thought it said, “delivering the wood” and wondered where the message was going. As soon as I read the Bible passage, I realized my mistake. I enjoyed your message about God’s word and our responsibility to deliver to others and also to ourselves. You might have written it a few years ago; however, it is even more relevant today, I feel. Thanks for delivering the word. Blessings.
Greetings David and I sure did enjoy reading your revisited devotional this morning. How true, that when you became a minister, you were still continuing “to deliver” the word, just from a different perspective.
The word of the Lord certainly holds much important guidance and encouragement for our daily lives. Following His word and sharing with others truly brings us positive feelings of joy and comfort. Blessings for this writing you prepared that still holds very true meaning today.
