Matthew 5:16 – Let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven. (NIV)
One type of things that make personal computers easy to use are the little pictures on the screen called icons. Icons are interesting things — they take up almost no memory, and they exist for only one purpose: to point to the main program. All we have to do is to click on one of the little icons and we get a big program, hidden in the background, opening up a screen full of beautiful colours and sounds and all kinds of capabilities.
In today's verse, Matthew 5:16, Jesus is telling us to let our light shine so that people around us will see our good deeds, and they will, in turn, praise our Father in heaven. Jesus is asking us to be like computer icons for Him. He is asking us to point others to Him. We are not the main program; we are the "pointer" or the "computer icon".
Prayer: We thank You, Lord, that You are the light of the world. There is a lot of darkness in our world, and we need to see Your light. Help us to be like computer icons and point others to Your light. We pray in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

Perfect, thanks.
Thanks Ruth, blessings.
Pride in your good deeds is not the answer – humility, quietly caring for others, yes.
What a clever and perfect devotional!

Thanks Ruth,
Good analogy!
Blessings.
Thank you.
This little icon of mine.
Blessings.
Hiya Ruth,
Wonderful thought!
Blast from the past.
Thank you for this.
I appreciate how easy it is to understand. I am newer to the Presbycan devotionals, and I think that having ones that are repeats from years ago is a great idea.
Ruth, now when I click on an icon, I’ll remember your interesting comparison. The gifts of the Spirit are like God’s Icons, inviting others to see God’s life-changing power at work.
Thanks so much for writing.
Hi Ruth,
I really like your devotional about computer icons. They are such a good illustration of our role in God’s kingdom. Every time I use one now, I will remember the lesson. Thank you.
Good morning, Ruth,
I love the idea of being a computer icon which leads others to Jesus. Even though this was written over 25 years ago, it is still relevant and essential today. I very much enjoy when someone looks at something in a different way and applies it to our faith. Thanks for sharing. Blessings.
Love this, Ruth!
So up to date!
So didactic!
So simple!
…So short!
All of the above… I’m going to be a little icon of faith and see how many “clicks” I get today…
With gratitude,
(BC)
Great analogy Ruth! You are so right that in today’s world we certainly need more people to share the “light” of the Lord’s ways with many others. Clicking certain buttons on the computer can give us an endless variety of entertainment but it is much better if we reach out in person to people around us, spreading love and kindness and thus making daily life better than the way it presently is in today’s world. Blessings for this writing, although written years ago, still holds great advice for today.
Hello Ruth,
What spoke to me was the fact that I was just a few months from being born when this devotional was written.
Seeing it now reminds me about the immortality and eternal quality of God’s Word.
Blessings.
